Basingstoke may not top many England bucket lists, but after spending time exploring the town with my teenage son, I found it to be an easy and surprisingly enjoyable destination. Located in Hampshire less than an hour from London by train, Basingstoke combines modern shopping, historic sites, family attractions, and beautiful green spaces.
During our visit, we wandered through the town center, explored historic churches and gardens, enjoyed afternoon tea, and discovered that Basingstoke makes an excellent base for exploring southern England. Whether you’re planning a family vacation, a day trip from London, or simply passing through Hampshire, here are the best things to do in Basingstoke.
Getting to Basingstoke from London
One of the things that surprised me most about Basingstoke was how easy it was to reach. Located less than an hour from London by train, it makes a convenient day trip or weekend destination for families exploring Hampshire.
1. Explore Milestones Museum
One of the most popular attractions in Basingstoke, Milestones Museum recreates Victorian and 20th-century streets complete with historic shops, vehicles, and hands-on exhibits. Families can step back in time and experience what daily life was like in Hampshire decades ago.

2. Visit Basing House
History enthusiasts shouldn’t miss Basing House, the ruins of one of Tudor England’s largest private homes. Once home to the Marquess of Winchester, the site played an important role during the English Civil War.
Walk through the ruins, learn about the siege of Basing House, and enjoy the peaceful grounds surrounding the historic estate.
3. Wander Around Festival Place
One of our favorite stops was Festival Place. The shopping center offers hundreds of shops, restaurants, cafés, and entertainment options in the heart of town.
Even if shopping isn’t your priority, Festival Place is a convenient place to grab lunch, escape the rain, or simply people-watch while exploring Basingstoke.

4. Discover Church Square and St. Michael’s Church
One of the prettiest areas we stumbled upon was Church Square. The historic church, gardens, and memorial spaces create a peaceful contrast to the modern shopping district nearby.
The gardens provide a quiet place to sit, reflect, and enjoy a slower pace while exploring the town center.
5. Enjoy Afternoon Tea in Town
No trip to England feels complete without afternoon tea. During our visit, my son and I stopped for a traditional tea service complete with sandwiches, pastries, and freshly baked scones.
It’s a fun experience for visitors wanting a classic British tradition without traveling into London.
6. Visit the Willis Museum
Located in the town center, the Willis Museum showcases the history of Basingstoke from Roman times through the modern era. Interactive exhibits and local artifacts help tell the story of Hampshire’s development over the centuries.
7. Spend Time at War Memorial Park
War Memorial Park is one of the best free things to do in Basingstoke. Families can enjoy walking trails, open green spaces, gardens, and seasonal events throughout the year.
It’s especially nice for visitors traveling with children who need space to run around after sightseeing.
8. See a Show at The Anvil
The Anvil is one of southern England’s best-known performance venues. From concerts and comedy acts to touring productions and family shows, there is always something happening.
9. Visit the Haymarket Theatre
For a more intimate theater experience, head to the Haymarket Theatre in the town center. The venue hosts comedy, drama, musicals, and community productions throughout the year.

One of the biggest advantages of staying in Basingstoke is its location. Several of Hampshire’s most popular attractions are within easy driving distance, including:

Is Basingstoke Worth Visiting?
While Basingstoke may not have the fame of Bath, Oxford, or London, we found it to be an enjoyable destination with a good balance of history, shopping, family attractions, and green spaces. Exploring the town with my teenage son gave us a chance to slow down, enjoy a traditional afternoon tea, wander through historic church grounds, and experience a different side of Hampshire that many visitors overlook.
