2016-03-09 13.18.0320 weeks! I can’t believe it.  30 pounds lost! I hope to do a side by side finale at six months.

So this week my mom is coming into town from Arizona for my youngest’s second birthday. You would think I am afraid of having to deal with the pretzel bark, the cupcakes, the Greek orzo salad, or the chips… but after being to so many kid’s birthday parties in the past 20 weeks while on the Smart for Life program, that doesn’t scare me much. I have learned how to control myself in front of the multicolored frosting. What does scare me is my mom coming for 10 days…

Food is very important in my family and every time my mom visits we always indulge, and often a little bit too much. It’s “trigger” mom = eating bad. Individually we eat pretty good, but together it quickly becomes an all-you-can-eat buffet.  Let’s just say we like to celebrate “each other.”


The good thing about Smart for Life is that when you are on your maintenance plan you incorporate traditional food, so indulging a little is possible. However, when you are me, “indulging” and “a little” don’t go hand-in-hand. So I have to be extra careful that one scoop of ice cream doesn’t become two, and 2 doesn’t become 3, and: “well who cares, I’ve already had 3 scoops of ice cream so let me take a look at that brownie…”

At the end of the day people are telling me that I will gain the weight back soon because “I only eat cookies.”  They are wrong and you will see.  Smart For Life is a lifestyle.  The cookies helped me eat small meals and eat six times a day instead of eating three big meals and feeling sick after.  It has taught me so much more.   It is natural to gain a little here and there and have to keep working at it.  Food is a drug too but you can’t put it down, like alcohol.  The struggle is real but that’s why there are so many diets out there.  A lot of them work. Some of them don’t.  You have to find what works for you.  Smart For Life works for me.


  1. What kind of meals will you eat in the maintenance phase? I’m planning on doing this plan again but I’m concncerned afterwards. Hope to hear back!

    1. Well, you stick to lean protein and veggies. I still eat an egg white omelet daily and veggie burgers. Of course I’m not as rigid with sugar. I like eating fruits and veggies like corn but I found it’s about choices. I started putting packets of stevia in my wallet for moments I might want sugar like if I go to Starbucks. I still love my sweets and have to be careful. I still eat the cookies and protein bars and I still eat 6 small meals a day. I’ve managed to maintain pretty well.

  3. Congrats!!! 30lbs in 20 weeks is amazing!!! We as Americans eat all wrong. We live to eat instead of eating to live. Your 100% right on 6 small meals a day instead of 3 large is perfect. Keep up the amazing work…
