The Approaching Storm Around TikTok: Examining the Growing Controversy
Controversy surrounds the popular social media platform TikTok, and recently many universities have taken action. The University of Texas was just one among them to bar TikTok from campus Wi-Fi due to safety, privacy, and data mining worries.
Other institutes such as Oklahoma State, Boise State University, Auburn University, and even the University of Central Oklahoma also blocked access for similar reasons in a short span of time.
President Joe Biden Recently put into Law a Bill that Prohibits the Use of TikTok
Last month, President Joe Biden passed legislation that prohibits the use of TikTok on all federal devices. In its wake, 31 states have followed suit and forbidden citizens from using the app through government-issued gadgets.
Meanwhile, California, New York, Massachusetts Hawaii, and Vermont are stepping up to completely prohibit it while Louisiana Florida West Virginia & Pennsylvania are strictly limiting usage in certain state agencies alone.
But this is the least of our problems…
While some videos on TikTok may appear harmless, they can have serious and even potentially life-threatening effects. Brain damage, spinal cord injuries, cardiac arrest – these are all real possibilities for kids participating in certain trends.
I’m not here to tell you whether or not your children should be using social media platforms such as TikTok; I watch social media with my kids. instead I suggest that you speak with them about potential risks associated with it so they can make educated decisions themselves.
And while parental controls might help limit the amount of time spent online each day, ultimately understanding how to stay safe is confidential knowledge between a parent and child.
