I wanted to share a holiday dessert with you that is not only a classic and delicious, but also easy to make for anyone, especially busy moms such as myself! Black forest cake, also known as black forest gateau, is a must-have dessert in our home, especially because my wonderful husband is French and it’s one of his favorite sweet treats during this time of the year.
Where Did the Black Forest Cake Originate From?
Black Forest Cake was born in the southwest region of a German mountain range known as the Black Forest, which is renowned for its wealth of cherries.
This is a Traditional Recipe
This Black Forest Cake recipe is actually quite popular in French Patisseries that specialize in sweets and baked goods, such as my traditional recipe made with AMERICAN HERITAGE® Chocolate that I’m going to share with you today.
AMERICAN HERITAGE Chocolate, which is based on original 1700s recipes, has spices, such as vanilla, orange peel, and cinnamon, used to flavor chocolate by early Colonial chocolate makers. Spices from around the world are mixed into the chocolate, which gives the chocolate a magnificent and rich taste. This unique taste of the chocolate shavings boosts the flavor of any chocolate recipe!
If you are feeling discouraged because you think that grating chocolate is hard, stop right there! The AMERICAN HERITAGE Chocolate used in this recipe is here so that you don’t have to waste extra time grating chocolate anymore.

This layered cake serves 10-12 people. You will have a few steps, making the cake, the cream, and the dipping syrup. The main ingredients are chocolate shavings, cocoa powder, and cherry syrup and maraschino cherries for (homemade cherry filling). Some people also use cherry liqueur.
