A road trip to Arizona wouldn’t be complete without a stop in Prescott. In addition to Jerome (the largest ghost town in Arizona), Sedona (famously known for its unique red rocks), and Flagstaff (home to Arizona’s Tallest Mountain), this little town is about 100 miles northwest of Phoenix. Visiting this town is well worth your time if the Grand Canyon is your ultimate destination.

The charm of this town has always impressed me and keeps me coming back for more. We especially love the holidays when it snows, and there is no better way to spend them than here. The city is surrounded by Ponderosa pines, earning it the nickname “Arizona’s Christmas City”. Over 100 trees illuminate the iconic courthouse and surrounding expansive plaza during the holiday season with an impressive Christmas light display!

Prescott has Lots of Things to do in the Summer

Locals and tourists can enjoy the summer months by strolling downtown, enjoying cafes like Cuppers Coffee House, picnicking in parks, or attending concerts in the square. In this historical southwest city, there are lots of fun things to do like hiking trails and kayaking. If you love a good scare, you may even want to try a haunted house tour!

Go on a 1.5 Hour Horseback Ride

Go on a horse back ride with a small group. There are multiple trails to choose from.

Go on a Private Off Road Adventure Tour

Enjoy Ponderosa to Goldwater Lake. This route has picturesque views with mostly tall pines with lots of steep ascents and descents and a few water crossings. This tour is an hour and a half with a 5 minute break at Goldwater lake for pictures and then return to the Square.

Enjoy Wine Tasting Room & Art Gallery

Sample some delicious wines at the Flying Leap Vineyards and Distillery. They offer a variety of reds, whites, and fruit wines. The best part is that you can enjoy the art gallery while you’re there!

Spot a Possible Ghost Sighting at The Hassayampa Inn

The Hassayampa Inn is one of the most notoriously haunted hotels in Arizona. The inn is said to be home to the ghost of a former bride who died on her wedding day. Guests have reported seeing her ghost wandering the halls and even appearing in their rooms!

Stay at a Historical Landmark – HOTEL ST. MICHAEL

If you are looking for a place to stay in Prescott, the Hotel St. Michael is a perfect choice. This historic hotel is located in the heart of downtown and offers stunning views of the courthouse plaza.

The rooms are elegantly appointed, and the service is outstanding. Be sure to enjoy a meal at the on-site restaurant, The Palace.

Even though there is no history of anyone dying within the walls, numerous guests have reported feeling a presence.

Stay at a Haunted Hotel – HOTEL VENDOME

Though the Hotel Vendome has had many proprietors during its history, one in particular remains. According to legend, a young girl named Abby came to the Prescott area for treatment of TB.

After getting married, the two bought the Hotel Vendome.

The new owners agreed to allow them to stay in Room 16 after they lost possession of the hotel for financial reasons.

Some say her ghost still roams the halls of the Vendome after she tragically the sudden disappearance of her other half, and that she is responsible for the many mysterious occurrences that have taken place there over the years.

Plus, they have Joe Mudd’s Coffee and Bakehouse inside the store, so you can fuel up with some delicious coffee while you shop till you drop!

The Prescott Gateway Mall is the perfect place to do some serious shopping! With stores like Dillards, American Eagle, and Victoria’s Secret, you’re sure to find everything you’re looking for. And if you need a break from all the shopping, there’s a great children’s play area where your little ones can burn off some energy.

Buy Something Sweet at Prescott Candy Company

Prescott Candy Company is Prescott’s premier old-fashioned candy store, and it’s located in the well-known Bashford Courts on the third floor. The Prescott Candy Company has the best in retro confections and old-fashioned candy, and my kids love stopping by.

The fact that they have the option to grab and weigh their candy and go is great because I can better monitor their consumption. If you’re looking for a fun place to take your kids (or if you’re just a kid at heart), Prescott Candy Company is the place for you!

Looking for something fun and educational to do with the kids? Why not take a self-guided walking tour of downtown Prescott? There are plenty of historical landmarks and cultural attractions to explore.

My favorite place to enjoy dining out, though, is Bill’s Pizza. The food is fantastic, and the service is great. I also really enjoy the atmosphere at Whiskey Row. They also have a great homemade margarita!

Live music and good coffee make the perfect combination. Folk, blues, and live music lovers will rejoice at Old World Cafe. Not to mention, the owner’s wife has her paintings hung up all around the cafe. They’re fascinating and vibrant and add to the place’s atmosphere. The coffee is excellent, too.

You can get it in a mug to drink or take it to go. And if you’re looking for something more substantial, they’ve got breakfast burritos and an egg sandwich that will hit the spot.

Are you looking for something fun to do on a Sunday afternoon? Why not treat yourself to a fabulous high tea at the Hassayampa Inn? The Peacock Room is the perfect setting for an elegant afternoon tea, with its luxurious decor and gorgeous views. And the selection of finger foods, scones, and Chantilly cream will satisfy your sweet tooth.

Thumb Butte is one of the most popular hiking destinations in Prescott, Arizona. The butte is located just outside of town and offers stunning views of the surrounding area. There are several different trails you can take to the top of the butte, so it’s perfect for hikers of all levels.

And if you’re feeling adventurous, you can even camp overnight at the top of the butte. Just be sure to bring plenty of water, as there is no water available on the trail.

This is one of Prescott’s locals favorite things to do.

FARM Provisions is a local food market located in Prescott known for “ simple food elevated”. The market features a variety of local and organic produce, meats, cheeses, and more. FARM also has a cafe where you can grab a quick bite to eat.

Arizona Backcountry Llamas offers a unique hiking experience that allows you to get up close and personal with these friendly animals. The “Meet the Llamas Hike” is a short, easy hike along the shores of a beautiful lake filled with waterfowl. During the hike, you’ll have the opportunity to feed and pet the llamas, and they’ll even carry your snacks for you! This is a great way to learn about these amazing animals while getting some fresh air and enjoying the stunning scenery.

Go Fishing at Lynx Lake

If you need a break from all the outdoor activities, you can always rent a cabin or spend the day in one of the recreational areas. Located in the Prescott National Forest, Lynx Lake’s recreation area offers boating, fishing, camping, hiking, kayaking, sailing, and canoeing opportunities. This 55-acre recreation area is popular with families.

Have a Picnic at Goldwater Lake

About four miles from Prescott is Goldwater Lake, a 15-acre lake with fishing docks. Camping is available, and there is a mile-long walking trail. You can enjoy a BBQ or go canoeing here. Several other amenities are also included, such as a fun kids’ park, picnic areas, and horseshoe pits.

Enjoy Kayaking at Watson Lake

Watson Lake is a beautiful man-made lake located just outside of Prescott. The lake is perfect for fishing, canoeing, and kayaking and one of my favorite things to do in Prescott. And if you’re feeling adventurous, you can even try your hand at rock climbing. There are several different trails you can take to explore the lake and its surroundings.

Camp at Pebble Creek Campground

Pebble Creek Campground is a great option for those who want to camp in the Prescott National Forest. The campground offers RV and tent camping, as well as a group camping area. There are also several different trails you can take from the campground to explore the surrounding area.

Heritage Park Zoological Sanctuary

Heritage Park Zoological Sanctuary is a nonprofit wildlife sanctuary dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of native animals. The sanctuary is home to a variety of animals, including bears, coyotes, eagles, owls, mountain lions, and wolves. You can take a self-guided tour of the sanctuary to see these amazing animals up close.

And if you’re feeling brave, you can even participate in a “Zoo Keeper for a Day” program where you’ll help care for the animals!
