This weekend was the opening weekend of the Chinese Lantern Festival. I had no idea what to expect as this was my first experience seeing Chinese Lanterns but I did know that the lighting of the lanterns is considered an art and an integral part of festivals and celebrations in China. There was so much more and something for everyone.
The 2017 festival lanterns highlight “The Wild,” including lanterns in the form of animals from around the world, including; Africa, Antarctica, Asia, America and more. We got to experience authentic Chinese entertainment and multicultural shows.
Of course, if there was the Age of Dinosaurs at Dinosaur Empire, my kids were in on the event! I just had to mention dinosaurs.
As soon as we parked, we saw the long line of people waiting to get it. I had the feeling that it was popular. Kids were playing while their parents stood in line and the aroma of Chinese food got me in the mood to party!
There is something for everyone at the Chinese Lantern Festival. The first thing the kids went to were the dinosaurs. They had dinosaur rides for only $2 at Dinosaur Empire. They loved them! Children must be 5 years and older and weigh less than 100 lbs.
The KUNG FU performances started at 6:30 and it was a great show with professional martial art performances. This style of fighting called “The Kung Fu Embassy” includes the following animal imitative-style boxing: Tiger Boxing, Dog Boxing, Monkey Boxing, Praying Mantis Boxing, Scorpion Boxing and hard Qing gong (SIMILAR TO THE KUNG FU PANDA MOVIES).
At the end of the show the audience is invited up to participate and are coached. On the night we were there all the kids went up on the stage and it was cute how they tried to learn the poses. There is also another show at 8 pm if you missed the first one.
It was beautiful to walk around while the sun was setting. The lanterns are magnificent even before nighttime falls. There are illuminated figures of over 800 lanterns.

This is an experience that one can only understand when they are standing in front of the lanterns. It’s beautiful.
There are also folk art demonstrations by 9 folk artists from China.
There were vendors to buy trinkets and Chinese gifts from.
