Celebrate Lightning McQueen Day with an Easy DIY Finish Line Flag

Guess what we are totally freaking out about? Lightning McQueen Day on September 5th! Lightning McQueen packs a 750-horsepower V-8 and can reach 60 mph in 3.2 seconds on his way to a 200-mph top speed.  My boys love anything with speed but they love their favorite character from the animated Pixar film Cars; Lightning McQueen.

The kids are ready to open their Disney Pixar Cars 5 pack (available at Walmart) and get their engines rumbling.  It’s a race between Shannon Spokes, Danny Swervez, Lightning McQueen, Jackson Storm, and Brick Yardley. The only thing they need is a Finish Race Car Flag.

So, we decided to make our own very simple race car flags for the finish line! The boys are excited and can’t wait to see who wins on the race track! Is it going to be Lightning McQueen?

We just needed 5 items; scissors, black and white foam or paper, a hot glue gun and a pack of wooden round dowels.

Just fold white paper over in half and over the stick.  Then glue the stick to the paper and glue the four edges shut. Cut to the size you want.  Then draw the squares on the paper.  Cut the black foam into squares (tracing the size) and then hot glue them on the paper/foam.

Why black foam? Because it’s fun and sensory. But you can use regular black paper if you want.

And voila! You have yourself a flag.  Of course, you could go to the store and buy one, but we love creating things. It’s important for us to keep our creative juices flowing.

They loved playing with their Mattel Race Around Radiator Springs 3 FT race track from Walmart.  It comes with a motorized booster.

There they go!

“Focus. Speed. I am speed.”

Stop by Ramone’s to get a cool custom look on his rotating car lift.  Don’t forget Lightning McQueen needs to get his tires done first at Luigi’s Casa Della Tires – “Home of the Leaning Tower of Tires.”

So much fun.

Anyone need to stop for a bite at Fla’s V8 Cafe? They need to keep the energy going!

Don’t forget to stop and get gas.

Uh, oh.  Looks like Lightning McQueen is falling behind.

These boys can’t handle the excitement!

But now he’s in the lead!

These boys are loving the pressure! The suspense is killing them as the motorized booster pushes them through the entrance and through the Cozy Cone tunnel.

We knew our Lightning McQueen would win!

This Race Around Radiator Springs Playset connects to other sets. Mattel toys are available in the toys/collectibles aisle at Walmart.

How are you going to celebrate Lightning McQueen Day?

  1. I had no clue there was a Lightening McQueen Day, now that I do know! I don’t know how I’m going to celebrate it!

  2. I didn’t know Lightning McQueen had his own day! My little brother would have loved this back when he was in his Cars phase.
