Here’s one vacation I’ve found that can please every member of the family. I’m talking about a cruise. Some 40 percent of grandparents are traveling with their grandchildren, AARP reports and Holland America Cruises is the best choice for multigenerational groups.

Families enjoy Holland America’s upscale, mid-sized ships ranging from 1,258 to 2,666 guests — smaller than many mega-ships but with plenty of onboard entertainment.

FAQ’s

Is Holland America a high-end cruise line?

Here are some key points about Holland America Line:

  1. Target Market: HAL targets mature travelers and those looking for a refined, traditional cruising experience. It appeals to those who appreciate a blend of classic and modern cruising.
  2. Ship Design and Atmosphere: HAL ships are known for their elegant design, art collections, and sophisticated atmosphere. The decor is classic and often includes extensive use of wood, brass, and fine art.
  3. Service and Amenities: The service on HAL is noted for being attentive and courteous. While not at the level of luxury lines, the staff-to-passenger ratio is higher than on many mass-market lines, leading to more personalized service. Amenities include spacious cabins, fine dining options, enrichment programs, and high-quality entertainment.
  4. Dining: HAL places a strong emphasis on dining experiences, offering diverse culinary options with specialty restaurants and partnerships with renowned chefs.
  5. Itineraries: HAL offers a wide range of itineraries, including longer and more exotic routes that attract seasoned travelers. Their itineraries often focus on destination immersion and include comprehensive shore excursion programs.
  6. Price Point: The pricing for HAL cruises is higher than that of mass-market lines but generally lower than ultra-luxury lines. This positions them in the premium category.

What is the average age on the Holland America cruise?

The average age of passengers on Holland America Line (HAL) cruises tends to be higher compared to some other cruise lines. While specific data can vary based on the itinerary and time of year, the average age of HAL passengers is typically in the mid-50s to 70s range.

Several factors contribute to this demographic:

  1. Longer Itineraries: HAL offers many longer cruises, which tend to attract retired individuals or those with more flexible schedules.
  2. Traditional Cruising Experience: HAL’s focus on a more traditional and elegant cruising experience appeals to mature travelers who appreciate a refined atmosphere.
  3. Enrichment Programs: The line offers extensive enrichment programs, including lectures, cooking demonstrations, and cultural activities, which are popular with older guests.

However, this does not mean that younger passengers or families are absent. During holidays and school vacation periods, the demographic can skew younger as families and multi-generational groups take cruises together.

Is Holland America owned by Carnival?

Yes, Holland America Line (HAL) is owned by Carnival Corporation & plc. Carnival Corporation & plc is one of the largest cruise companies in the world and owns several well-known cruise brands, including Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Seabourn, Cunard Line, AIDA Cruises, Costa Cruises, and P&O Cruises, among others.

Holland America Line operates as a distinct brand within the Carnival Corporation portfolio, maintaining its own unique identity, style, and target market while benefiting from the resources and support of its parent company.
