Taking on CityPlace in the New Mazda3 Grand Touring 4-Door
Blog - March 22, 2018

I was given the NEW Mazda3 Grand Touring 4-door and hosted for lunch at City Cellar to facilitate this article.  However, all opinions are my own.

My mom came into town and when she comes into town… we shop.  And we don’t just shop.  We shop until we drop.  So, I wanted to take her to a place that we’ve only been to once together, CityPlace in West Palm Beach. Since then, some new restaurants have popped up and the scenery has changed.

We hopped into the NEW Mazda3 Grand Touring 4-door.  It was a treat from driving the SUV I’m always driving with the kids.  This car was fast and so fun to drive.

I wouldn’t use it as a family car, but my kids did like being in it.  It was my “get away” car.  By “get away,” I mean get away from the day-to-day grind.  It was like a mini vacation from everything.  No sitting in the car lines.  Easy to park, easy to steer, easy to the touch.

When I drive my SUV, it is always in a very practical manner: go from point A to point B as quickly and efficiently as possible. When I drove the Mazda 3 Grand Touring I experienced the road in a way that I don’t get to often.  I wasn’t thinking of how to get from A to B as quickly as possible, I was enjoying the road. I felt like I was one with the road.

I’m not the type of woman who cares a great deal about cars. For me it’s all about being safe and practical. What I didn’t realize is that I just needed to be put in the right car for me. My husband used to drive a European sports car and it never really did it for me, except maybe for the status. It just wasn’t my kind of car. The Mazda 3 Grand Touring is my kind of car!

I’m not turning into Danica Patrick any time soon, but I now really understand what Mazda means when they say that Driving Matters.

Now, if you’re not familiar with Mazda which I personally wasn’t very familiar with, expect for driving my mom’s CX-9 when I visit her, every 2017 model year Mazda model was tested by IIHS and has been rated a TSP+ when equipped with optional front crash-prevention and specific headlights.  This is IIHS’s (and independent safety-rating organization) highest-possible rating.

For those who are technical, the Mazda 3 Grand Touring is a 2.5L 4-cylinder engine (efficiency and fuel economy) equipped with Mazda’s Skyactiv technology. It comes with a 6-speed transmission with a sport mode. It even has the race car looking paddles behind the steering wheel if you want to manually change gears – my SUV definitely doesn’t have that!

The interior is simply beautiful. It really is. Every friend who sat in the car (one of them owns an older Mazda sedan) was blown away. If you look at interiors these days, they all look a bit generic. The interior of the Mazda 3 Grand Touring is a work of art and an unbelievable value. My friend’s BMW is almost 3 times the money and it doesn’t have this level of attention to details.

We hit the shops.  My favorite shops there are H&M, Anthropologie, Lucky, and I just discovered my new favorite shop The Paper Source.

It’s not just a paperie, it’s an experience.  Anyone could wander in there and buy a gift for someone, but you will never leave without something interesting.  I can’t wait to go back!

I also went back to Anthropology.  As I said before, I was at CityPlace a couple years previously and when I was there I purchased a candle for myself.  It was just a matter of days that my 4-year-old picked it up and dropped it and it broke.  I was so disappointed.  This time I went back and purchased the same candle.  Happy Birthday to me!

Last, I found a shop I’ve never been into, Primo Comfort Shoes and got these super cute TOMS!

A shopper always needs their energy when shopping for the day so we hit up City Cellar, a landmark restaurant that opened in 1999, known for its award winning wine collection that can be sampled by the bottle, glass or flight.  Chef Andris Salmanic does a fantastic job of creating a delicious menu using locally sourced, fresh ingredients.  You can eat in the dining room which features a floor to ceiling glass enclosed wine cellar or you can eat outside while watching CityPlace in action.

We started with the Calamari with roasted garlic lemon aioli, and spicy tomato sauce. I loved the octopus too.

The Crab Cake Sandwich was a hit! It was so filling, with big chunks of crab in it, we boxed up some of it. It had a side of Piquillo Pepper Aioli with Gem Lettuce, and tomato on a fresh bakery Bun.

We also had the Capri Pizza.  I’m a sucker for anything with fig, goat cheese and prosciutto! They added mozzarella with arugula and a drizzle of Balsamic Agro Dolce.  I think I ate all but one slice.

I was told by the General Manager, Michael Ignatowicz (Iggy)that Iggy’s Mom’s NY Style Cheesecake was the best cheesecake ever. I’m a pretty picky with cheesecake but glad that I tried it.  It was decadent! He was right!

If you like bananas and you like chocolate bread pudding, you need to try “One Banana, Two Bananas” from the dessert menu.  It is hearth baked banana, chocolate bread pudding, toasted walnuts, charred banana and Gelato.  It’s delicious but pretty heavy so you might want to take a little home too.
You won’t be disappointed in City Cellar Wine Bar.  The food is great, the service is great and wherever you sit, inside or outside, it’s beautiful.

Check them out on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.

We came home exhausted.  Actually, we took the New Mazda3 Grand Touring 4-Door to two more malls! With all that driving for a week, I filled up my gas tank once.  Another bonus! My mom and I don’t mess around when it comes to shopping.

  1. I enjoyed your review. I felt like I was right there with you. It was easy since we had a 2016 Mazda 3 and loved it. We just traded to another model the Mazda CX5. We needed more room since we travel a lot and have a dog. Both models are great. We have had Mazda’s in the past and will continue to drive them because they have always stood up to the test of family and are so dependable. The newer models have nice features and the gas mileage is awesome. We were getting about 36 mpg on trips with our “3”. We haven’t taken our new one on a trip yet, but it’s been getting over 32+ mpg in the city. Also, you showed your trunk in the picture and their trunks are extremely large, a plus for us shoppers that spend a day shopping.

  2. I watched the video. The inside of this car looks really classy as well as the inside! At one time, I would have never considered buying a foreign car, but I want my money’s worth! So whatever works for me or us. I have a couple of friends who own Mazda’s. They love them and said they that they wouldn’t own another model.

  3. I made a couple of mistakes. Sorry! I meant to say: The inside of this car looks really classy as well as the outside!
AND They love them and said they that they wouldn’t own any other another model.
    Sorry again!

  4. This car sound so nice. I love how it holds the road and is so comfy. It also looks great. I am happy you got to enjoy this and share with us. Thank you so much
