How to Get Through Summer with Kids On a Budget
Blog - June 27, 2017

This review was made possible by iConnect and Luvs.  I was provided compensation to facilitate this post, but all opinions stated are 100% mine.

When I was a child, I loved summer. I spent many summers on the beaches in Greece eating watermelon with my cousins.  It meant freedom for me.  Lots of laughter, followed by siestas.  It meant going on vacations and being carefree.

I wouldn’t of known it back then but when we moved to the U.S.  my parents were always finding ways to save money, especially in the summer.  We lived in Arizona and the heat would keep the air conditioning running all the time.  They had to find other ways to save money.  Life wasn’t so simple any more.

Now that I have young ones, I see how high the cost of living can be with snacks, diapers, wet wipes, formula, etc.  I have found some ways to save money, especially during the summer.

Buy Food from Farms

We go to farms and purchase fresh produce.  Summers are meant for eating watermelon and fresh salads.  If I don’t use everything, sometimes I freeze it, like herbs.  But farms are a lot more economical than supermarkets.  We even get our bread there for $1.50 when the same bread is $3.50 at the local supermarket.

Have Play Dates at the Park

I set up play dates all week and we take turns bringing dinner or lunch for the kids.  All the kids want to do is be outside with their friends. They want to run and play. You don’t want to come home with dirty kids, only to have to make dinner and then give them a bath.  Make it easier on yourself and get a pizza and bring it to the park for dinner.  Splitting the cost will save money too.

Save on Necessities Like Diapers

There are things that you can’t really skip out on, especially with toddlers, like toilet paper, wet wipes, diapers, etc.  Coupons are the way to go with those items, especially diapers. This month Luvs is offering a $2 print-at-home coupon on any one diaper pack.  Use this coupon at any discount or grocery store  where Luvs Diapers are sold Luvs are softer and more absorbent than ever before, with large stretch tabs for easy fastening, ultra-leakage protection and a money-back guarantee.   Luvs also has Ultra Leakguards with NightLock Plus™ to provide the high-quality features babies and parents need for less cost than the premium brands.  Coupons are the best way to save.  That’s an extra coffee to buy for me!  Iced coffee, that is.

How do you plan on saving money this summer?

  1. Wow these are some great ideas. My kids love going to farms and picking fresh produce. they are always so excited for apple picking season.

  2. I’m a teacher, which I thought meant summers off. It certainly does, but when you don’t get paid for two months it’s hard to go out on fun adventures. These are great tips for making summer fun without breaking the bank.

  3. The farm idea is cute for the kids and also a great way to save money. The idea of also going to the park is great, kids don’t spend enough time outside these days.

  4. I’ll bring my little one to the park to cut my expenses on electricity at home. I would rather spend money on gas and food on our way to the park than on electricity for airconditionig.

  5. These are great tips for parents with little ones. The trip to a farm should keep them busy for hours.

  6. Experience doesn’t have to be expensive especially during the summer. I am loving these ideas. It’s good to save money and still see the kids enjoying their time!
